On Sunday 5 October 2025, the "Nordstad" section of Luxembourgish nature conservation NGO natur&ëmwelt organised a birdwatching event around the Weiler hamlet in the municipality of Wincrange, as part of the annual "Birdwatch Weekend”.

The event invited participants to an excursion around the Weiler ponds, where a group of enthusiastic birdwatchers observed and counted migratory birds. During the event, they learnt details about the challenges migratory birds face on their long journeys, such as climate change, habitat loss and illegal persecution.

Also on the Sunday, Birdwatch Day took place at the Biodiversum in Remerschen, organised by natur&ëmwelt in collaboration with the Nature and Forest Agency (ANF). The event welcomed numerous visitors, including families who took the opportunity to participate in guided tours of the Natura 2000 area and watch over 100 birds being ringed.

Birdwatch Weekend takes place simultaneously in over 30 countries. According to natur&ëmwelt, in Luxembourg the three most commonly observed species in the Grand Duchy were:

• Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) – around 5,000 individuals

• Canada goose (Branta canadensis) – 250 individuals

• Eurasian Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) – 48 individuals

An additional guided tour and visit of the nature reserve and "Schlammwiss banding station" in Uebersyren, near Marnach, will take place on Saturday 11 October.

At the event attendees can learn more about the importance of the reserve’s reed bed for migratory birds as well as the scientific work undertaken at the reserve.
