On Wednesday 19 November 2025, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) reported that it had been awarded the European Energy Award Gold, a distinction that honours European cities and municipalities most committed to combating climate change.

According to the VdL, the city achieved an overall score of 78.2% based on a catalogue of measures defined within the framework of the Climate Pact. The capital distinguished itself particularly in the areas of mobility (94%), thanks among other things to the replacement of combustion-engine buses with electric vehicles; municipal buildings (93%), through the continuous improvement of the energy performance of its infrastructure; as well as communication and cooperation (83%), reflecting its concrete and long-term commitment to a more environmentally friendly city.

The VdL noted that, as a signatory of the Climate Pact since 2012, the city is continuing its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through the implementation of concrete measures aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions, strengthening the production and use of renewable energy and improving the city’s resilience to climate change.
