On Wednesday 12 November 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works announced the flat-rate subsidy allocated to municipalities to finance night-time public transport services will be tripled from the year 2026.

According to the ministry, night-time services such as “Late Night Bus”, “Nightbus” and “Nightrider” will see an increase in funding of between €1,500 and €4,500 per municipality, subject to the adoption of the 2026 budget law by the Chamber of Deputies.

This measure forms part of a broader commitment by Luxembourg’s Government to promoting road safety by providing a safe alternative to private vehicle use in the context of night-time social activities.

The ministry remarked that this proposal is fully in line with the coalition agreement, which provides for the expansion of the “Nightbus” and “Nightrider” service offering in Luxembourg. The Government encourages municipalities to further develop the service by increasing the number of journeys offered and by further promoting its use.

Currently, the subsidy paid by the Public Transport Administration consists of two components:

•            a flat-rate amount of €1,500 per municipality, which will increase to €4,500 from 2026;

•            a variable amount of €1.50 per resident living in the municipality (maintained at this level).

The ministry noted that the increase of the flat-rate amount per municipality strengthened the Government’s support for rural municipalities and highlighted that in these areas, characterised by smaller and more dispersed populations, access to public transport services can present a particular challenge.

Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes stated: “I welcome the commitment of municipalities to providing night-time mobility, a service particularly appreciated by young people when going out. It is important that this service continues to be expanded and that high quality for users remains guaranteed. I am pleased that, thanks to this substantial increase in the flat-rate subsidy per municipality, we can help expand the service and, at the same time, contribute to improving road safety.”

The ministry reported that in 2024, all one hundred Luxembourg municipalities benefited from this subsidy, demonstrating its usefulness. Regarding procedures, each municipality must meet the conditions set out in Circular no. 2025-026 of the Public Transport Administration and submit its subsidy application for the year 2026 separately no later than Wednesday 8 January 2027.
