On Thursday 15 January 2026, the Automobile Club of Luxembourg (ACL) shared ten practical tips to help customers make informed decisions and avoid common mistakes when buying a new car ahead of the Autofestival.
The ACL reported that earlier this week the Federation of Automobile and Mobility Distributors (Fedamo) held an official press conference for this year’s Autofestival, which will start on Saturday 24 January.
According to the ACL, this period is an ideal time for many people to consider purchasing a new vehicle. However, in view of new drive technologies, rising costs and increasingly complex contract models, it is advisable to be well prepared.
The ACL shared the following ten practical tips outlining what prospective buyers should consider to make informed decisions:
-
Clearly define your needs: before making a purchase, buyers should consider how they plan to use the vehicle. Key criteria include driving profile, space requirements, annual mileage and budget.
-
Choose the right engine type: petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) each offer their own advantages. Buyers should select a drive type that fits their daily needs and can be used sensibly in the long term.
-
Consider total costs and conditions: beyond the purchase price, buyers should factor in running costs, insurance, maintenance and energy consumption. For EVs, this also includes charging infrastructure, electricity tariffs and charging costs when travelling, as well as whether home or nearby charging is possible.
-
Compare offers and take time to decide: discounts, optional equipment and financing models can vary significantly. Comparing several offers helps buyers to make a well-informed decision without time pressure.
-
Carefully select equipment and options: all desired features should be clearly listed in the purchase contract to ensure the vehicle meets expectations.
-
Clearly agree on delivery times and trade-in terms: a fixed delivery date or a clearly defined time window provides planning certainty. If a vehicle is traded in, the agreed price should appear clearly in the contract.
-
Review financing options carefully: whether paying in cash, taking out a loan or leasing, each option affects budget and flexibility differently and requires careful consideration.
-
Read contract terms thoroughly: a purchase contract is legally binding. Buyers should allow sufficient time to review all contractual details before signing.
-
Take a test drive under real conditions: a test drive remains essential to assess comfort, handling, driving behaviour and space. Ideally, buyers should drive on familiar routes.
-
Make use of independent advice: buyers who feel unsure should seek independent guidance. ACL members can access neutral advice before purchasing, including on drive types, costs, available subsidies and suitable charging infrastructure.
