The natur&ëmwelt English-speaking Section has decided to celebrate this year's Nature Festival by organising a guided excursion on Sunday 16 June from 14:00 to 17:00, that will focus on the typical butterflies of the wetlands in the Ösling in the context of the Life Éislek project.
The overall objective of the project is to restore the diversity of wetland habitats at 11 sites in the Natura 2000 network in the Éislek region and improve the conservation status of three target species, namely: Violet Copper (Lycaena helle) butterfly; Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) bird; Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) bird.
Using nets, participants will capture butterflies to identify them before release. The natur&ëmwelt guide will provide participants with surprising information on their development, nutrition and behaviour of these masters of metamorphosis.
Children are welcome to join the walk though they will need to be able to walk some kilometres. As the terrain is wet and unstable, young children should be carried; the terrain is not suitable for prams / pushchairs.
As butterflies are rather timid creatures, dogs are not permitted on the walk. What to bring: Waterproof footwear; Drinking water; Butterfly identification book, if you have one; Binoculars, if you have them. F
