In recognition of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Grand Duchy and Portugal, Luxembourg Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, is visiting Lisbon on 24 and 25 May 2016.
Minister Asselborn is conducting the working visit at the invitation of his Portuguese counterpart, Augusto Santos Silva.
On 21 May 1891, following the accreditation of Viscount Pindella, already accredited by Guillaume II, named first Portuguese Ambassador to Luxembourg, that diplomatic relations between the two States was established.
During his visit, Minister Asselborn will engage in talks with Minister Santos Silva and will be received in audience by Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Jean Asselborn is also due to meet with former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio.
Discussions will take stock of bilateral relations between the two countries, before being devoted to European and international politics.
Luxembourg holds a large Portuguese community, representing 16.2% of the overall population, whilst the Portuguese language is used by 14.6% of residents in the workplace.
