On Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 June 2016, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, and his wife Carmen will be conducting a state visit to Luxembourg at the invitation of TRH the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess.

Accompanied by the Romanian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Cristian Badescu, the Romanian President and First Lady will be arriving at Luxembourg Airport where they will be greeted by the Minister for Family and Integration, Minister for the Greater Region, Corinne Cahen. The delegation will then be officially welcomed by TRH the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess on the steps of the Grand Ducal Palace, followed by military honours, national anthems, a review of troops and a presentation of the respective delegations.

Following a private lunch in the presence of TRH the Hereditary Grank Duke and Hereditary Grand Duchess, Monday's programme will feature the placing of a wreath at the Luxembourg National Monument of Solidarity in the presence of Prime Minister, Minister of State, Xavier Bettel; Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Étienne Schneider, and Chief of Staff of the Luxembourg Army, Romain Mancinelli.

The Romanian Head of State is also due to be received in audience by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars Di Bartolomeo, Xavier Bettel, and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, before the presidential couple is welcomed at the Hôtel de Ville by Luxembourg City mayor Lydie Polfer for an academic session attended by the college of aldermen and the municipal council.

A gala dinner will close the first day of the state visit.

On Tuesday, the presidential couple and the Grand-Ducal couple will visit Esch-Belval and the new economic, cultural, social, intellectual and leisure attraction.

A subsequent presentation of the old Massenoire industrial building at the foot of the blast furnaces will take place in the presence of Mars Di Bartolomeo and Minister of Higher Education and Research, Marc Hansen, to outline the urban planning and urban design concept of a blast furnaces terrace.

The delegation will then be welcomed by the Rector of the University of Luxembourg, Professor Rainer Klump, at the Maison du Savoir which was inaugurated in September 2015. There, the Romanian President and his wife will have the opportunity to meet Romanian students studying at the university and with members of the Romanian academic staff.

A visit to the Chamber of Commerce and the Joseph Kutter exhibition at the Musée national d'Histoire et d'Art (MNHA) will also feature on the agenda.

At the Musée d'art moderne Grand-Duc Jean, the Luxembourg Prime Minister and Romanian President will discuss bilateral relations and major issues in European and international politics, whilst Jean Asselborn meets with Romanian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Cristian Badescu.

The second day of the visit will conclude with a reception hosted by the President of Romania and his wife Carmen Iohannis in honour of TRH the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess in the Lucien Wercollier cloister and the garden of Neumünster Abbey. Young Romanian tenor Silviu Mihaila will interpret the national anthems.

The state visit will end with a traditional ceremony in front of the Grand-Ducal Palace, from which the Grand-Ducal couple will take leave from the Romanian President and his wife.
