On Monday 8 December 2025, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden called an urgent press briefing in which he announced the resignation of Minister of Labour and Minister of Sport, Georges Mischo.
Prime Minister Frieden explained that Minister Mischo had recently faced regular criticism and "attacks", including in ways he considered to be "unfair and harmful". After a lengthy discussion with the prime minister on Sunday 7 December 2025, Minister Mischo tendered his resignation. The prime minister informed the Grand Duke of this decision on Monday morning.
Prime Minister Frieden described Minister Mischo as "a friend and a colleague" who had worked enthusiastically on his dossiers. He stressed that Georges Mischo had chosen to step down in the interests of allowing the government to "peacefully" continue its work and to strengthen the country in a challenging context. Prime Minister Frieden noted economic challenges as well as a highly complex geopolitical situation that is also affecting the national economy and labour market. He said it was "immensely important" that the government is able to focus in the coming months on calmly and substantially implementing the coalition programme.
The prime minister announced his intention to nominate Marc Spautz as the next Minister of Labour. The CSV MP and former minister has experience in labour rights and strong relations with Luxembourg's social partners, according to Prime Minister Frieden, who added he would be "directly operational" and ready to dedicate himself fully to the portfolio.
For the role of Minister of Sport, the prime minister is proposing the appointment of Martine Hansen (also CSV), who currently already serves as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture and Minister for Consumer Protection. She has expressed an interest in the role and is considered competent for the position. The prime minister noted the importance of sport for health, social cohesion and education, among other areas, and said he felt Minister Hansen could "do good work" here.
Prime Minister Frieden said he would discuss the proposed appointments with the CSV party leadership on Wednesday 10 December 2025. With the approval of the Grand Duke, a decision could be taken by the end of the week, allowing the new ministers to assume office shortly thereafter.
The prime minister thanked Georges Mischo for his commitment and noted that he will remain in his ministerial roles until his successors are appointed.
When asked, he clarified that the resignation was not linked to any single issue or file.
