On Monday 5 September 2016, St George’s International School in Luxembourg-Hamm started back after the summer holidays for the first day of its 2016-17 academic year.

After 18 months of planning and development, St George’s announced the opening of its new Zinnen building, named in honour of Jean Antoine Zinnen, the composer of the national anthem of Luxembourg.

Alongside the school's 17 new staff members, this year St George’s is welcoming 110 new students, meaning that over 730 students are attending school today to see and experience the finished Zinnen building for the first time. Students will now be able to make use of its brand new facilities which include, but are by no means limited to, an auditorium which will seat 350 spectators, state-of the-art music recording suites, 10 new additional classrooms, a brand new library and a Sixth-Form common room. The Zinnen building has 5 floors in total and forms a new centrepiece of the school situated between the Hamilius (Primary) and Barthel (Secondary) buildings, providing a connection between the two. Later this month, St George’s will hold an official inauguration ceremony wherein guests and staff will be invited to celebrate the opening of the new building.

"I would like to welcome all students and staff back to school today – we are all very excited to be starting a new school year with a new building and lots of new facilities to help everyone learn to the very best of their ability!" stated Dr Barkei, School Principal.

Whilst a new building is exciting enough, this school year St George’s will also be welcoming a new Chair of the Board of Governors, Christopher Cheesman. Mr Cheesman was elected by the board to take over from Mark Turner, who stepped down at the end of the last academic year. St George’s is immensely grateful for all the hard work Mr Turner has done for the school over the past 7 years and, going forward, it also looks forward to supporting and working with Mr Cheesman as he begins his tenure.

"The school owes a great deal to Mark who led the Board while the school developed into its current position. These are very big shoes to fill and I will rely very much on the continued support from the members of the Board, the school staff and all the parents in order to keep our progress going and to have such outstanding students in the school" stated Christopher Cheesman

St George’s is back in full swing; on 17 September the school is hosting its Annual ‘Freshers and Followers’ event. This event invites both new and returning parents to see what Luxembourg has to offer in terms of extra-curricular activities, societies and organisations, more information can be found: www.st-georges.lu.
