On Monday 1 December 2025, Luxembourg’s Department of Media, Connectivity and Digital Policy (SMC) announced the official launch of the DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting) standard.
The official launch took place at the premises of Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE), in the presence of Elisabeth Margue, Luxembourg’s Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Media and Connectivity, as well as representatives of radio services. Completion of the network is scheduled for June 2026.
This launch marks the culmination of a process begun in September 2020 with a preparatory study, which analysed the technical and financial requirements of DAB+ and included preliminary tests with radio stations. This work led to the publication of a national roadmap outlining the strategic vision and legal framework and providing information to citizens about the new technology.
According to SMC, DAB+ offers several advantages compared to analogue broadcasting, including:
- an enhanced audio media offering in Luxembourg and increased media pluralism, enabling new radio stations to enter the market;
- improved sound quality;
- guaranteed nationwide coverage for each radio service included in this digital multiplex.
As part of the launch, the SMC also announced the launch of the website dabplus.lu and a national information campaign aimed at raising public awareness of the advantages of DAB+ and supporting the transition to digital radio broadcasting.
“DAB+ gives new momentum to radio diversity in Luxembourg by offering new opportunities to listeners and radio services,” Minister Margue said. “This launch is part of our commitment to modernising the media sector and ensuring fair and modern access to information. It helps strengthen pluralism and prepares our country for the challenges of digital transformation, placing innovation at the service of society.”
A second digital multiplex aimed at local radio stations is part of the government’s ambitions, and the government will support them in their transition to this new standard.
