The European Parliament has announced the five nominees for the 2026 LUX Audience Award, to be screened between 27 January and 5 February 2026.
The initiative is organised in cooperation with the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg, CinEast, the Pierre Werner Institute, Creative Europe Media, the European Film Academy and Europa Cinemas.
The five nominees are:
• Tuesday 27 January 2026 @ 18:30 in Ciné Utopia: Sentimental Value (NO/DE/DK/FR/SE/UK/TU; EN sub-titles) by Joachim Trier. • Thursday 29 January 2026 @ 18:30 in Ciné Utopia: It Was Just an Accident (Iran/FR/LU/US; EN sub-titles) by Jafar Panahi. Synopsis: An unassuming mechanic is reminded of his time in an Iranian prison when he encounters a man he suspects to be his sadistic jailhouse captor. Panicked, he rounds up a few of his fellow ex-prisoners to confirm the man's identity. Followed by a discussion with Isabel Wiseler, MEP (CSV/EPP), and Raha Raz, director and visual artist. • Friday 30 January 2026 @ 18:30 in Ciné Utopia: Love Me Tender (FR/LU; in FR with EN sub-titles) by Anna Cazenave Cambet and starring Luxembourg's Vicky Krieps. Synopsis: Clémence, a lawyer, leaves her marriage to embrace her true self. Her ex-husband fights for custody of their son Paul, manipulating him. As their relationship deteriorates, Clémence struggles to maintain her maternal bond. Followed by a discussion with Marc Angel, Quaestor of the European Parliament (LSAP/S&D). • Tuesday 3 February 2026 @ 18:30 in Ciné Utopia: Screening of Christy (IE/EN; in EN with FR sub-titles) by Brendan Canty. Synopsis: Set in Cork’s working-class North-side, “Christy” follows a 17-year-old boy forced to move in with his estranged older half-brother after being thrown out of foster care. What starts as a temporary solution slowly becomes a fragile sense of belonging, as Christy reconnects with his roots and forms new friendships despite the potentially damaging influence of his extended family. As both brothers face difficult choices, the film unfolds as a sensitive and grounded portrait of family, identity and responsibility. • Thursday 5 February 2026 @ 18:30 @ Europa Experience, Luxembourg-Kirchberg: Deaf (ES; in ES with EN, DE sub-titles & ES Sign Language) by Eva Libertad. Synopsis: Angela's deafness raises concerns during her pregnancy regarding connecting with her daughter. Post-delivery, partner Héctor supports her as she learns to mother in a society lacking adequate accommodations for the hearing-impaired. Seats are free of charge, but must be reserved beforehand. Audiences are invited to rate them from one (poor) to five stars (excellent) to decide the winner, with the voting deadline 12 April 2026 (end of the day) with prizes including a trip to the European Parliament in Brussels to attend the LUX Award Ceremony on 14 April 2026 and meet directors and film crews of the nominees.
