With the end-of-year festivities getting underway, Chronicle.lu is compiling a series of articles exploring some of the Christmas markets taking place across the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

While major events such as the markets in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette run for several weeks, many smaller yet equally charming local markets open for just one day or a single weekend.

The "Hobby-Chrëschtmaart" (Hobby and Christmas Market) in Mertert took place from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 December 2025 in the central park, set among trees decorated with lights and other seasonal elements.

Bringing together seventeen hobby manufacturers and seven food stalls, the market marked its fifth year and featured activities, live music and family-oriented entertainment.

The programme began with the official opening on the first day, including speeches by the mayor and a representative of the organisers, NoperschaftsChaoten, followed by a reception for municipal representatives, associations and sponsors, as well as live music, featuring a performance by Vocals on Tour. On Saturday, the programme continued with live performances by Sagbuts, a torchlight procession and evening concerts by Harmonie Mertert-Wasserbillig and Kelly Decker.

Sunday's programme included dance performances by Apollo Six and a Zumba Kids group from Top Fit, alongside a visit from Santa Claus who distributed gift bags to children. Additional concerts across the weekend included choir singing in the church and a performance by a student band from Lycée Michel Rodange, performing publicly for the first time.

Talking with Chronicle.lu, representatives of the local association, which organises the event annually, said that one of the main goals of the event was to support and promote local associations, while also offering a non-commercial, community-focused Christmas market. Organisers also noted higher visitor numbers compared to previous editions, with two new tents dedicated to manufacturing introduced this year.

To make access easier for visitors, a free shuttle bus service operated throughout the weekend, connecting various stops in Mertert and Wasserbillig and running every 30 minutes.
