With the end-of-year festivities getting underway, Chronicle.lu is compiling a series of articles exploring some of the Christmas markets taking place across the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
While major events such as the markets in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette run for several weeks, many smaller yet equally charming local markets open for just one day or a single weekend.
On Saturday 20 December 2025, Chronicle.lu combined a lunchtime visit to the "Dikricher Chrëstmaart" in Diekirch with a festive evening at the "Weller Chrëschtmaart" in Weiler (Putscheid), two charming, community-focused events in the north-east of Luxembourg.
Dikricher Chrëstmaart
The Christmas Market in Diekirch took place over three days, from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 December. About a dozen local clubs and associations operated various stands spread across the pedestrian zones of the town centre. The event felt noticeably larger than in previous years.
Visitors were spoilt for choice when it came to food and drink, with options including raclette, grilled meat and chips (fries), goulash soup, onion soup, "Ierzebulli" (pea soup), flammkuchen, chilli con and sin carne, vegan hot dogs, "kniddelen" (dumplings), as well as sweet treats such as Christmas cookies. The hot drinks selection included mulled wine and mulled gin, plus non-alcoholic versions.
Handmade crafts featured prominently, particularly in the old church, which hosted a "Handwierkermaart" showcasing the work of local artisans. Decorations such as Christmas trees and lights, the wooden chalets and a "Fotobox" added to the Christmas market's festive atmosphere.
The entertainment programme featured live performances through the streets and on stage throughout the weekend. Acts included Saxitude, Die Nachtschwärmer and the Dixie Boys Band.
A charming touch was the presence of donkeys - a nod to Diekirch's emblematic animal - brought to the market by the "Om Béchel" pedagogical farm based in Asselborn.
Weller Chrëschtmaart
The Weiler Christmas Market, organised by the Nei-Al Weller non-profit organisation, took place next to the fire station on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 December. The market was lively and quite crowded, yet retained a cosy, village-like feel, on Saturday evening. Visitors were greeted by illuminated and decorated Christmas trees and a tractor positioned near the US memorial, along with a sign wishing everyone "Schéi Chrëstdeeg" (Happy Christmas).
About a dozen wooden chalets, adorned with festive lights, offered a selection of hot drinks and hearty food, including mulled wine, pumpkin soup, grilled meat and chips, "Gromperekichelcher" (deep-fried potato cakes) with apple compote and flammkuchen. Decorative stars suspended above the market illuminated the night sky, while colourful wooden signs pointed the way to various stands - and even to the North Pole, some 4,451 kilometres away.
Live music added to the warm and cheerful atmosphere, and visitors could browse a range of handcrafted gifts and decorations - from Christmas baubles to wooden ornaments - made by local artisans.
Both markets had a charming, magical and welcoming feel, with a relatively relaxed atmosphere that made them particularly family-friendly (and dog-friendly). Payment by cash and card / Payconiq was generally accepted, although visitors to the Weiler market were required to purchase vouchers in advance for food and drinks; any unused amount was refundable.
