Luxembourg’s Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of State, the High Commission for National Protection (HCPN) and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) have reported that the government will continue the implementation of the country’s public alert and information strategy through a scheduled monthly test of the national siren network on Monday 5 May 2025.
In addition, the cell broadcast (CB) alert channel is set to be tested at approximately 11:00 across the entire territory of Luxembourg. However, this time, the alert sent via cell broadcast will only be received by mobile devices on which notifications for “LU-Alert Test” — which are deactivated by default — have been explicitly enabled.
Instructions for enabling alerts on mobile devices are as follows:
- Apple: Go to Settings - Notifications, scroll to the bottom of the list and activate “LU-Alert Test” under the “LU-Alert” section;
- Android: Go to Settings - Safety and emergency - Wireless emergency alerts and activate “LU-Alert Test”.
Those who opt to receive the test alert via cell broadcast are advised to inform people around them in advance, as the alert will be accompanied by a loud sound signal that may cause alarm.
As with previous tests, the cell broadcast alert will also be issued through the “LU-Alert” mobile application and on the official website www.lu-alert.lu. Since this is a test, no action or specific behaviour is required.
The Ministry of Home Affairs reiterated that the cell broadcast alert channel is a highly intrusive alert method. Alerts sent via cell broadcast appear as priority notifications on the screen of a mobile device, even if it is set to silent or locked and are accompanied by a sound and vibration. The sound stops automatically after a few seconds. Public authorities use this alert channel when an event presents a serious or imminent threat to the population and immediate action is required.
Additional information and a FAQ section are also available on the LU-Alert website.
