The Grand Ducal Police have reported that following receipt of various reports, as well as targeted checks across Luxembourg, six driving licences we revoked due to failed alcohol tests by drivers between Saturday 23 to Sunday 24 May 2026.
According to the police, at around 21:15 on Saturday 23 May, they received a report concerning a possibly intoxicated driver on Rue Wolsberich in Diekirch. A police patrol immediately attended the scene and located the driver, who was asleep behind the wheel with the engine running. Officers woke the individual and carried out a check. It was established that he did not possess a valid driving licence. A breathalyser test returned a positive result and a provisional driving ban was issued.
At around 23:30 on Saturday 23 May, police received a report concerning a vehicle travelling in the direction of northern Luxembourg in a zigzag manner on the Route du Nord near Schieren. A police patrol stopped the driver shortly afterwards. A breathalyser test returned positive and the driver’s licence was confiscated.
During the early hours of Sunday 24 May 2026, a police patrol in Doncols noticed a driver due to dangerous driving behaviour. The driver was immediately stopped. During the check, officers observed clear signs of alcohol consumption and also established that the individual was not in possession of a valid driving licence. The driver refused to take a breathalyser test, following which a provisional driving ban was issued.
Also during the early hours of Sunday 24 May 2026, a police patrol on the Route du Nord near Ettelbruck noticed a vehicle due to unsafe driving behaviour. The driver was immediately stopped and checked. Officers observed clear signs of alcohol consumption, following which the driver was subjected to a breathalyser test. The result was positive and the driving licence was confiscated.
The Grand Ducal Police also carried out alcohol impairment checks in Hoscheid-Dickt, Ettelbruck and Ingeldorf during the night of Saturday 23 to Sunday 24 May.
The checks were undertaken at the request of the State Prosecutor, as provided for by Article 12, paragraph 3, subparagraph 8 of the amended law of 14 February 1955 on the regulation of traffic on all public roads.
According to the police, the checks were performed between the hours of 22:45 and 03:45 on Haaptstroos in Hoscheid-Dickt, near the railway station in Ettelbruck and near a sports shop in Ingeldorf.
During the operation, a total of 463 motorists were subjected to a preliminary breath test, even in the absence of any serious indication of impairment.
In fifteen cases, the test returned positive and eleven official reports and two fixed fines were issued.
In four cases, driving licences were confiscated on the spot.
During the operation, eight other offences under the Highway Code were also recorded.
