On Friday 28 August 2026, Luxembourg's Water Management Administration (AGE) announced the end of the vigilance phase for drinking water supplies, which had been in place since Monday 13 July 2026.
According to the AGE, the situation had improved sufficiently to lift the measure, following a significant decrease in drinking water consumption in recent days.
Since the vigilance phase was introduced, lower consumption has reduced pressure on the country's water supply infrastructure. The AGE added that current reserves and supply capacities are sufficient to meet the population's needs without maintaining a nationwide vigilance phase.
Luxembourg’s Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity and the AGE thanked residents, municipalities, water syndicates and businesses for their efforts during this period. The AGE will continue to monitor the hydrological situation in cooperation with drinking water suppliers and other relevant stakeholders.
However, the administration stressed that Luxembourg's waterways remain under pressure following drought and high temperatures in July and August this year. River flows remain particularly low and, due to the persistent lack of rainfall, water levels have not yet recovered sufficiently, leaving aquatic ecosystems “particularly vulnerable”.
Water abstraction from rivers and surface water bodies therefore remains prohibited until further notice throughout Luxembourg, with the exception of the Moselle and subject to specific provisions established by ministerial orders.
Despite the lifting of the vigilance phase, the AGE continues to encourage responsible use of drinking water, including avoiding unnecessary consumption, quickly repairing leaks and only using household appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers when they are full.
