According to the latest figures from Luxembourg's Ministry of Justice and STATEC, 567 companies were declared bankrupt and 86 were liquidated during the first half of 2026.
Bankruptcies
The number of bankruptcies fell by 1.7% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025 (567 versus 577 rulings). According to initial estimates, 1,423 salaried jobs were lost as a result of bankruptcies, compared with 1,414 in the first half of 2025.
Holding companies and investment funds accounted for the highest number of bankruptcies (150).
The construction sector recorded 88 bankruptcies during the first half of 2026, resulting in 429 job losses, representing a 13% decrease compared with the same period in 2025.
The retail sector registered 92 bankruptcies, an increase of 9.5% year-on-year. Job losses in the sector are estimated at 148, down around 23% compared with the first half of 2025.
The hospitality sector (Horeca) recorded 43 bankruptcies, down 30% compared with the first half of 2025. However, estimated job losses among salaried employees rose by 41% to around 305.
Liquidations
A total of 86 companies were wound up during the first half of 2026. Liquidations fell by 6.5% compared with the same period in 2025, although this represented only six fewer court orders. Around 28% of the companies liquidated during the period were holding companies and investment funds.
STATEC noted that the data are based on court decisions recorded in the Commercial Register, with the most recent figures dating from Monday 13 July 2026.
The number of bankruptcies is calculated as the sum of "new cases" or "re-openings", minus bankruptcies reported under the judicial procedure ("judgments and declarations of bankruptcy"). These figures are provisional.
