The parental collective of the Bëschklass de Beggen special educational programme has announced it will gather on Wednesday 3 June 2026 at 08:40 in front of the Beggen primary school following the announcement of the closure of the programme from the 2026/2027 school year onwards.

In a press release, the collective said that concerned families expressed their deep concern about this decision, which it said would bring to an end a recognised and well-regarded educational project that has been established in the Beggen district for several years.

According to information provided to parents, this decision is linked to a number of enrolments considered insufficient to allow the simultaneous opening of a traditional class and a Bëschklass within cycle 1.0. However, parents emphasised that actual demand for the Bëschklass had never been properly assessed for the 2026/2027 school year.

Enrolment in cycle 1.0 and the possible choice of the Bëschklass normally take place in two separate stages. Parents first enrol their children in primary school and are then informed about the existence of this specific educational offer. According to the mobilised families, the closure decision was announced before this process could take place, meaning parents of children entering cycle 1.0 therefore never had the opportunity to be informed of this option or to indicate whether they wished their children to join the Bëschklass.

The collective highlighted that since the announcement of the closure, several families have indicated that they would have wished to choose this educational option for their children. Several parents reported having only discovered the existence of the Bëschklass through families whose children currently attend or will join the class next year. Once informed about the educational project and its benefits for children, many of them expressed a wish to also enrol their children.

The families said they have undertaken various steps with parents’ representatives, the school committee, the Education Department of the City of Luxembourg, and the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth. A first letter was sent on Friday 8 May by concerned parents and on Monday 11 May, a second collective approach supported by several signatures was submitted to the relevant authorities, requesting a reassessment of the announced decision and the opening of a dialogue with the families concerned.

The mobilised families stressed that the Bëschklass represents far more than a simple educational alternative. The project allows children to learn daily in contact with nature while developing their autonomy, confidence, resilience, ability to cooperate and overall well-being. All share the same concern: the disappearance of an educational offer they consider valuable for the Beggen district. They also highlighted the commitment of the teachers who have supported this project over the years and helped make it a recognised educational experience for many families.

However, the parental collective questions why new infrastructure intended to support the Bëschklass is being inaugurated this week despite the project’s closure from the following school year.
