Luxembourg’s Roads and Bridges Administration has announced that preventive measures in the Stafelter tunnel on the A7 motorway will be lifted during the night from Monday 23 to Tuesday 24 March 2026, while restrictions remain in place in the Grouft tunnel due to identified deterioration in ventilation system components.
According to the administration, abnormal deterioration of fan blades was detected in the Grouft tunnel during routine maintenance inspections. As a result, preventive operating measures, including a speed limit reduction to 70 km/h and the closure of the overtaking lane in both directions, have been in place since 30 January 2026 in both the Grouft and, as a precaution, the Stafelter tunnel, as both are equipped with similar ventilation systems.
Further tests and analyses confirmed that, although the systems are of the same generation and from the same manufacturer, the materials used differ slightly, leading to varying levels of deterioration. While the condition of the fan blades in the Grouft tunnel requires replacement, no such intervention is necessary in the Stafelter tunnel.
As a result, normal operation in the Stafelter tunnel will be restored, with the speed limit returning to 90 km/h and traffic resuming on two lanes in each direction.
Preventive measures will remain in place in the Grouft tunnel until the damaged components are replaced. Works are currently scheduled for July 2026, with normal operation expected to resume in August 2026.
The administration added that regulations concerning heavy goods vehicles remain unchanged, with transit trucks not permitted to leave the A7 motorway, while speed limits displayed by CITA continue to be monitored by automatic radar controls.
