On Wednesday 10 December 2025, the Young European Federalists of Luxembourg (Jeunes Européens Fédéralistes - JEF Luxembourg) released its response to the United States’ recently published National Security Strategy and described it as “a disturbing and inaccurate narrative about the European Union”.

In its press release the non-governmental, pro-European youth organisation highlighted the strategy’s chapter Promoting European Greatness, in which the EU is described as a structure that “undermines political liberty and sovereignty” and Europe itself is described as being on the path toward “civilisational erasure”.

JEF said: “This rhetoric reflects a deliberate attempt by Washington to reframe the EU, its closest ally, as subordinate—a failing project that must be weakened or dismantled. It celebrates the rise of nationalist movements across Europe and promotes a Europe of ‘aligned sovereign nations’ acting independently.”

The organisation added: “Washington appears to favour a set of small, isolated states that are dependent, divided and strategically manageable. It seems disturbed by the greater European unity we have achieved and which we wish to continue. We fully reject this narrative.”

JEF highlighted that the strategy highlighted the fragmented nature of Europe, particularly regarding Ukraine and described European governments as “unstable” and “subverting democratic processes”.  The organisation said this allowed Washington to step into a vacuum the US believes exists, positioning itself as the only actor capable of ensuring European security or negotiating peace while leaving Eastern Europe vulnerable to Russian imperialism. It added that a Europe of 27 separate states is geopolitically convenient for Washington and Moscow.

The organisation emphasised that Europe will not “remain European” by returning to nationalism and said: “The European Union exists to overcome centuries of conflict and division, and to build a continent of peace, rights, democracy, and cooperation. The European project is ambitious, but it must be completed, not dismantled.”

It added: “We, as JEF Luxembourg, want a Europe that is not a loose ‘aligned group of sovereign nations,’ but a democratic Union — a Union that respects cultural and regional diversity and protects national identities. We need a Union capable of speaking with one voice, defending its citizens, and acting in the world with courage and autonomy.”

Moreover, JEF called for a European Federation and said: “Europe needs more unity. The European Parliament has clearly stated this in its most recent report, which calls for deeper integration and stronger democratic institutions. Europe must act now if it does not want its future dictated by other powers.”
