
Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has presented statistics for the new school year.
According to the data, total enrolment in fundamental (primary) schools in Luxembourg will reach 63,435 pupils in 2025/2026, up from 57,432 back in 2019/2020 (62,705 in 2024/25), while at secondary level, pupil numbers will have risen from 47,943 to 54,610 over the same period (53,414 in 2024/2025). Overall, the school population will have increased by about 12% between 2019 (105,375 pupils) and 2025 (118,045 pupils).
Public international education has seen particularly strong growth, rising from 1,093 primary school pupils in 2019/20 to a projected 2,634 in 2025/26 (2,415 in 2024/25). In secondary schools, numbers increased from 1,831 to an expected 6,289 over the same period (5,635 in 2024/25). Public national programmes also showed steady growth, with numbers in primary education rising from 49,910 to 55,191, while classical secondary programmes recorded more modest gains, from 12,641 to 13,344.
Enrolment in private primary schools declined from 6,429 pupils in 2019/2020 to 5,610 in 2025/2026 (5,881 in 2024/25). By contrast, numbers increased in private secondary education, from 9,613 in 2019/20 to 10,478 in 2025/26 (10,373 in 2024/25).
More specifically, private international schools (grouping together preschool, primary and secondary) have seen pupil numbers increase from 12,165 in 2022/23 to 12,455 in 2023/24, and again to 12,514 in 2024/25. In 2025/26, this number is expected to drop slightly to 12,301 pupils. Within this group, the International School of Luxembourg (ISL) is set to welcome 1,322 pupils this year (down from 1,364 in 2024/25), while St George’s International School is expected to receive 844 pupils (843 in 2024/25).
The figures provided could change depending on the arrival or departure of students later in the year.
