The Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg has announced upcoming "Live Cinema" screenings of Lady Windermere's Fan and The Circus with Timothy Brock and the Luxembourg Philharmonic orchestra.

Once again this year, the Cinémathèque is inviting audiences to rediscover a masterpiece of silent cinema, set to music by composer and conductor Timothy Brock. With the Luxembourg Philharmonic, the American maestro will revive the great tradition of silent film with live musical accompaniment, during two "Live Cinema" film concerts at the Philharmonie Luxembourg.

The Live Cinema opens on Friday 23 January 2026 at 19:30, with Lady Windermere's Fan (1925), directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Ronald Colman, an icon of 1920s cinema. This sophisticated social comedy is often considered the director's greatest silent film and a quintessential example of the famous "Lubitsch Touch", with its narrative elegance built on suggestion, irony and subtlety. Adapted from Oscar Wilde's play, the film portrays the pretenses and reputation-building games of London high society with a surprisingly modern and nuanced feel.

A discussion with Timothy Brock, in conversation with Francisco Sassetti (Philharmonie Luxembourg), will precede the film concert at 18:45 in the Philharmonie's Grand Auditorium.

The following morning, on Saturday 24 January 2026, a "Live Cinema" screening of The Circus (1928), directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, will take place at 11:00. In this timeless classic that blends slapstick and melancholy, a poor vagabond finds himself unexpectedly hired by a circus, where his clumsiness delights the audience. Often hailed as one of Chaplin's most accomplished films, it combines spectacular comedic acts - including the famous lion cage scene - with profound humanity. This film is described as an ideal introduction to silent cinema for children, while also touching adults with its universal humour and genuine emotion.
