On Tuesday 16 September 2025, Luxembourg's LCGB trade union said it welcomed the recent announcement that authorities will deploy private security officers on Luxembourg’s tram network.
The LCGB said the decision represented the first direct response to the priorities strongly advocated by the union during the most recent Public Transport Safety Steering Committee on 24 July 2025.
The union, which called in its action plan for the “targeted deployment of security officers on public transport”,said it regarded the initiative as a positive signal and a first step towards comprehensive public transport safety. They noted that these new measures, already in place on the railway network and now extended to the tram system, confirmed the relevance and validity of the LCGB’s proposals.
The LCGB did however state that it regrets that this policy does not currently extend to buses, especially during certain hours on the most vulnerable and problematic routes. The union also re-stated its roadmap for eradicating violence and recommended that the deployment of security officers form part of a broader strategy that must include:
⁃ the priority installation of secure cabins on all buses operating on routes identified as “high-risk”;
⁃ strengthening police presence at stops located in sensitive areas;
⁃ improving cross-border cooperation between the various competent authorities;
⁃ intensifying security checks beyond national borders;
⁃ toughening legislation and sanctions against aggressors.
Moreover, the LCGB announced that it remains fully committed and vigilant to ensure that this first implementation is followed by other equally significant actions and will “continue to engage in dialogue with the ministry to progressively implement all its demands, ensuring that drivers and passengers enjoy a safe, dignified and calm working and travelling environment”.
