Elisabeth Hoffmann Appointed Director of National Museum of Resistance & Human Rights

On Tuesday 29 September 2026, Luxembourg's National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights (MNRDH) in Esch-sur-Alzette announced the appointment of Elisabeth Hoffmann as its new Director, effective from Thursday 1 October 2026.

According to the museum, following a recruitment procedure, the Board of Directors unanimously decided to appoint Elisabeth Hoffmann to the position. Until the retirement of the current Director, Frank Schroeder, on 1 March 2027, the institution will be managed jointly.

Elisabeth Hoffmann holds a PhD in history and specialises in memory studies. She completed a doctoral thesis at the Universities of Luxembourg and Lorraine on the memory of Second World War resistance in Luxembourg, Alsace, Moselle and Eastern Belgium. Since 2018, she has worked as a historian within the Foundation. Until 2024, one of her main responsibilities was to coordinate the new permanent exhibition and write its content, in collaboration with the museum team. She participates in the conception and implementation of the museum’s temporary exhibitions and events. In 2023, she joined the management team as an attaché.

Elisabeth Hoffmann is, among other things, a member of the Board of Directors of the Fondation Lydie Schmit, the “memory” advisory committee of the Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, the steering committee of the Master in Contemporary European History at the University of Luxembourg, the Scientific Council of the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp Memorial and the Archives Council.

Jérôme Courtoy, who currently heads the educational department, will succeed her as the museum’s historian.
