
On Tuesday 20 May 2025, the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg unveiled their programme for the 2025/2026 season at a press conference held at the Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.
Luxembourg-City Mayor Lydie Polfer gave the welcome address in which she congratulated all those involved with the 2024/2025 season, noting an increase of 25% to almost 55,000 spectators during the course of the season.
Tom Leick-Burns, Artistic Director and General Manager of Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, then gave a multilingual presentation on the scheduled programme which will run from September 2025 until early July 2026.
The “Focus Adolescence” programme will continue with six performances, including Oona Doherty’s Hard to be soft – A Belfast Prayer, a contemporary dance production and tribute to her hometown of Belfast, which will be performed on 10-11 October 2025 at 19:30.
Other productions of interest to the English-speaking community include:
- The Great Yes, The Great No, a chamber opera directed by William Kentridge. In French and English with surtitles, the performance blends opera, theatre and dance. Set in an old cargo ship, it is based on a real voyage carrying a group of passengers fleeing France in 1941. Performances will take place at the Grand Théâtre on 25 October at 15:00 and again at 19:30 and on 26 October 2025 at 17:00.
- Swan Lake: Matthew Bourne’s celebrated Swan Lake is marking its 30th anniversary with five performances in November 2025. Best known as a reinvention of Tchaikovsky’s work, it replaces the traditional female corps de ballet with male dancers. Performances will take place at the Grand Théâtre on 28 November at 19:30, 29 November at 14:30 and again at 19:30 and on 30 November 2025 at 17:00.
- Echo, by Iranian playwright, Nassim Soleimanpour, is described as being “a groundbreaking theatrical experiment”, in which an unprepared actor goes onstage without any prior knowledge of the script. They are guided only by the playwright’s instructions that are transmitted live. The English-language performance will be staged on 4 December 2025 at Théâtre des Capucins at 19:30.
- The Rocky Horror Show: the legendary rock ‘n’ roll musical is this season’s end of year production. The high-energy show is the longest running contemporary musical and has been seen by over 35 million theatre-goers worldwide. Performances of the “global sensation” will take place on 30-31 December 2025 at 19:30 and on 2-3 January 2026 at 15:00 and again at 19:30.
- The Land We Shared is a play by Larisa Faber that explores her Romanian heritage, as well as the effect of the Romanian communist dictatorship, in what is described as a multigenerational journey through Romanian history. Performances will take place at the Théâtre des Capucins on 7, 12-13 and 19 May 2026 at 19:30 and on 17 May 2026 at 17:00.
- Cock, by Mike Bartlett and directed by Anne Simon, will return to the Théâtres de la Ville following its run in 2024. The Olivier Award-winning play tells the story of John, who splits with his boyfriend and subsequently falls for a woman. The play focuses on relationships and sexual fluidity as John struggles with his choices. This production is part of a programme to mark Luxembourg Pride. Performances will take place at the Théâtre des Capucins on 27 and 30 June at19:30, on 28 June at 17:00 and on 3-4 July 2026 at 19:30.
Other highlights include: FaustX, a reimagining of Goethe’s Faust II, by South African director, playwright and installation artist, Brett Bailey, in October 2025; the multilingual performance of PESSOA – Since I’ve Been Me in January 2026; Puccini’s La Bohème opera in February 2026; Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, led by flamenco dancer and choreographer Patricia Guerrero, in February 2026; J.M. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello, Seven Lectures and Five Moral Tales, in Polish with English and French surtitles, in March 2026.
Evening performance start times at the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg will be at 19:30 (previously 20:00) during the 2025/2026 season.
Moreover, the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg will provide audio descriptions for some performances, vibrating belts for a selection of dance shows and surtitles (e.g. in English on selected Friday performances).
