On Thursday 10 September 2026, the Directorate General of Immigration of Luxembourg’s Ministry of Home Affairs published its monthly overview of applications for international protection and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for August 2026.

International Protection

A total of 82 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in August 2026, compared to 130 in August 2025 and 153     in August 2024. Since the beginning of the year, Luxembourg has received 900 applications for international protection, down from the 1,179 during the same period in 2025.

Authorities notified 82 decisions on international protection applications in August 2026, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 1,210. Of these, 65 resulted in the granting of refugee status, with none placed in subsidiary protection status.  A total of 54 applications were rejected under the normal procedure, while fifteen were rejected under the accelerated procedure.

According to the directorate, the highest number of applicants in August were from Eritrea (18), followed by Syria (13), Algeria (8) and Ukraine (5). Nationals from other countries accounted for 33 applications.

Temporary Protection

A total of 95 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in August 2026, up from 67 in June. Since the beginning of the year, the country has received a total of 547 temporary protection applications.

Authorities took 109 decisions on temporary protection applications in August, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 4,182. Of these, 92 resulted in the granting of temporary protection, while none concerned renewals.

94 of the applicants for temporary protection in August were Ukrainian nationals.
