On Thursday 29 January 2026, Luxembourg’s Administration of Bridges and Roads announced that preventative measures will be implemented in the Grouft and Stafelter tunnels following the abnormal deterioration of fans

According to the administration, the implementations will come into effect from Friday 30 January 2026.

The Administration of Bridges and Roads carries out two maintenance campaigns in the tunnels each year, which include preventive and corrective maintenance of safety equipment, checks on the functioning and interaction of the various systems, as well as cleaning of the tunnel walls.

This approach allows any early signs of malfunction to be detected quickly and addressed in the least invasive way possible. It helps to ensure the safety of road users while maintaining traffic flow by minimising the impact of mitigation measures on circulation.

Following the most recent inspection, abnormal deterioration of the blades of certain fans was observed in the Grouft Tunnel. To ensure optimal safety for road users, preventive operational measures have been implemented based on a risk assessment.

As the Grouft and Stafelter tunnels are equipped with fans of the same generation from the same manufacturer, both structures will be affected by the following mitigation measures:

• closure of one lane on the motorway (reduction of one lane);

• limitation of the maximum authorised speed to 70 km/h.

The administration said these measures will remain in effect until further notice. Regulations relating to heavy goods vehicles remain in force. Consequently, HGVs in transit are not permitted to leave the A7 motorway. Speeds displayed by the Traffic Control and Information on Highways (Contrôle et Information du Trafic sur les Autoroutes - CITA) will continue to be monitored via automatic speed cameras.
