From Monday 15 September 2025, a higher-capacity train, composed of three double-deck units, will begin running between Luxembourg and Metz during the evening peak, offering an additional 340 seats.

Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, announced on Friday 12 September 2025 that thanks to a joint initiative involving the Grand Est Region, the 17:15 service will now carry around 1,000 passengers. According to the announcement, this represents approximately 5% more capacity during the evening peak period (16:00–19:00) and marks the first step towards improving daily cross-border travel conditions.

The CFL said it had expanded its rolling stock and lengthened platforms at several stations along the Sillon Lorrain route to accommodate longer trains, increasing the available capacity on the line and improving travel comfort and conditions for passengers.

The partnership between Luxembourg and France builds on measures defined in the Paris Protocol of 2018 and the Belval Addendum of 2021, consistent with current efforts to strengthen cooperation across borders.

For projects located in France, Luxembourg and France share funding equally (50%–50%) in an effort to improve cross-border rail services.

Within the framework of the 2018 protocol and the 2021 addendum, Luxembourg allocated €230 million: €220 million for rail projects and €10 million for road projects. Altogether, Luxembourg and France dedicated €460 million to co-financed projects in France.
