On Tuesday 16 June 2026, the Grand Ducal Police announced that until Sunday 28 June 2026, it will carry out checks specifically focused on distracted driving with the aim of raising awareness and reducing road traffic accidents.
The police explained that distracted driving is one of the primary causes of road traffic accidents. Sending messages, as well as using applications or social media, places considerable demands on a driver's attention. Smartphones divert a driver's attention visually, audibly, physically and cognitively.
For this reason, the use of a mobile phone by the driver of a vehicle that is not parked or stationary is regulated by Article 170bis of the Highway Code. Road users who fail to comply with these provisions risk an on-the-spot fine of €250 and the loss of four points.
However, not only the use of a mobile phone but also lighting cigarettes, operating dashboard controls or navigation systems and even conversations using a hands-free kit can be sources of distraction.
In this context, the police urged drivers to refer to the wide range of information and safety advice on its website.
Moreover, the police noted that distraction does not affect motorists alone. Other road users, such as motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, may also be concerned.
As is customary during traffic checks, vehicle documents will also be inspected as part of this campaign. Drivers must possess and be able to present the following documents:
• Driving licence or learner's permit;
• Training record book (where applicable);
• Vehicle insurance certificate;
• Vehicle registration certificate;
• Latest roadworthiness test certificate (where applicable);
• Tax disc;
• Certificate of conformity / certified copy issued by the SNCA (for all vehicles registered from 1 February 2016 onwards).
With the exception of the certificate of conformity, all documents must be presented in their original form.
