On Tuesday 14 July 2026, Luxembourg City (VdL) unveiled the programme for the launch of "Mäi Quartier – Meng Plaz", a new initiative that will see four public spaces temporarily redesigned from Thursday 16 July to Sunday 13 September 2026.
The initiative will be officially launched on Thursday at 16:00 in Place de France in Luxembourg-Belair, after which the College of Aldermen will visit the three other project sites: Place Léon XIII in Luxembourg-Bonnevoie at 17:15; Cité jardinière in Luxembourg-Cents at 18:30; and Place Roedgen in Luxembourg-Cessange at 19:45.
Residents are invited to join the celebrations, which will include a “Grande Table Urbaine”, food trucks and opportunities to meet the local associations and partners that will animate the spaces throughout the summer.
The project follows the "Quartierspläng" urban consultation process carried out in 2024, which invited residents to share ideas on improving quality of life and strengthening community life in their neighbourhoods. According to VdL, it also forms part of its greening strategy, which identifies priority areas for increasing vegetation, improving climate resilience and creating more comfortable public spaces.
According to VdL, the initiative will transform four locations with temporary installations including urban furniture, additional greenery, shaded areas, drinking fountains and meeting spaces. Throughout the summer, local associations, institutions and community partners will organise activities reflecting the character and identity of each neighbourhood.
The temporary redesigns are intended to test ideas proposed during previous consultation phases, including the Apéri'tours and the Ideation Lab, while allowing the VdL to assess residents' feedback before developing permanent improvements.
The VdL said the initiative reflects its commitment to shaping neighbourhoods through a gradual, participatory approach based on residents' everyday use of public spaces, dialogue with local communities and practical experience.
Each site will also feature an information totem outlining the history of the location, the objectives of the project and the programme of activities planned over the coming weeks. The information will be updated regularly on the HOPLR neighbourhood social network and on the 24quartiers.vdl.lu website.
