On Thursday 18 June 2026, the Health Directorate of Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security activated a Level 3 heat alert due to forecast high temperatures and warm nights expected over the coming days.

According to the available forecasts, night-time temperatures are expected to remain above 20°C from Friday 19 June into Saturday 20 June 2026. From Monday 22 June 2026 onwards, the perceived temperature could locally reach up to 39°C, with humidity further increasing the sensation of heat. The duration of the alert will be adapted according to the evolution of the situation, which will be monitored continuously by the relevant authorities.

Support Measures for Vulnerable People

A specific support scheme is available for eligible people aged 75 and over, including monitoring visits and assistance with hydration during periods of extreme heat. The visits are due to begin shortly.

Eligible individuals aged 75 and over who live alone, have limited autonomy and do not receive assistance through dependency insurance, and who are not yet benefiting from this service, are invited to register or be registered by a relative by contacting the Luxembourg Red Cross on 2755 from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) between 08:00 and 15:00.

Outside office hours, healthcare professionals and CGDIS personnel may contact the Health Inspectorate's on-call service to arrange registration for eligible individuals.

COPAS is responsible for coordinating with home care and assistance networks for the support of beneficiaries. Individuals registered through the Red Cross are asked to answer when care staff visit their homes or to inform their assigned care network if they are absent.

For further information, the Health Inspectorate can be contacted on 24785-653 from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 12:00 and between 13:00 and 17:00.

The Health Directorate advised anyone experiencing discomfort, unusual fatigue, dizziness, headaches, confusion or fever to seek medical advice promptly. In an emergency, people should call 112.

Heatwave Precautions

The Health Directorate also reminded the public of key precautions during periods of extreme heat:

  • drink water regularly, even if not feeling thirsty;
  • avoid strenuous physical activity during the hottest hours of the day;
  • stay in cool places or in the shade whenever possible;
  • when going outdoors, wear light clothing, cover your head, stay in the shade and carry water;
  • keep windows, shutters, blinds and curtains closed during the day to maintain cool indoor temperatures and ventilate only during cooler hours;
  • regularly check on elderly, isolated or vulnerable people;
  • never leave a person, especially a child, or an animal alone in a vehicle.

The Health Directorate noted that the activation of the heat alert comes ahead of National Day celebrations and other events planned over the coming days and next week. It called for particular vigilance during public gatherings and outdoor events to ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities safely.
